Recent legislation is demanding that British industry takes environmental issues seriously. While the environmental impairment market has traditionally been risk averse, Dr Roger Litton says insurers are now more open-minded.
There is growing pressure on companies to take account ofenvironmental issues. In the last few years, there has been a dramatic
increase in the legislative requirements relating to environmental
contamination of air, land and water and, more recently, controls for
recovery of packaging waste. The UK's legislation, the Environment Act
1995, is in place but is not yet fully operational. However, it is only a
matter of time before Britain follows the example of other EU
countries.
